FAQ - Marine LED Searchlights 5,000m & 10,000m

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Marine LED Searchlights

Welcome to the Searchlight EU FAQ page. Here we answer the most common technical, commercial, and legal questions we receive from shipowners, harbor masters, and coast guard procurement officers across Europe. We currently offer two flagship models: our 5,000-meter workhorse model and our 10,000-meter premium long-range series.

1. What is the real-world difference between your 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter models?

Our two models serve different operational needs. Our 5,000-meter workhorse model delivers a powerful beam with 25,348,000 candela and a 5,000-meter beam distance at 1 lux, making it an excellent choice for commercial cargo ships, harbor patrol, and inland waterway navigation. It runs on 800 watts and offers manual or electric focus adjustment.

Our 10,000-meter flagship model is designed for extreme long-range requirements. Despite using only 600 watts, it achieves an astonishing 100,000,000 candela and a 10,000-meter beam distance at 1 lux through interchangeable precision lenses (15°, 3.5°, and a razor-sharp 1° spot). With a weight of only 60 kilograms, it is significantly lighter than our 5,000-meter model (which weighs up to 275 kilograms for the electric version), making it ideal for naval vessels, coast guard cutters, and rapid search-and-rescue operations where weight and extreme range are critical.

2. Are these searchlights compatible with European electrical standards?

Yes, absolutely. Both models are designed for international use and fully support European voltage requirements.

Our 5,000-meter model operates on AC 100-240V at 50/60Hz, which covers the standard EU 230V grid perfectly. Our 10,000-meter flagship model operates on an even broader range of AC 100-277V at 50/60Hz.

As your dedicated European partner, we ensure that every unit we distribute complies with the relevant CE and RoHS directives required for legal installation on vessels operating in EU waters. We manage all necessary customs documentation and regulatory conformity on behalf of our manufacturing partners.

3. Which model should I choose for search and rescue (SAR) operations?

For dedicated search and rescue operations where you need to locate a small life raft or a person in the water at extreme distances, we strongly recommend our 10,000-meter flagship model with the 1-degree lens. At 10,000 meters, the beam remains exceptionally tight, delivering maximum intensity exactly where you need it. The ultra-lightweight 60-kilogram housing also allows for easier installation on smaller rescue vessels or on elevated masts without requiring structural reinforcement of the deck.

For general patrol, escort duties, or navigating narrow harbors where you need to scan wider areas, our 5,000-meter workhorse model with its adjustable manual focus (from narrow spot to wider flood) offers more flexibility and is the more cost-effective choice.

4. What is the warranty on these products and how does after-sales support work in Europe?

We back every product with a full manufacturer's warranty: three years on the lighting unit itself and one year on the adjustable pedestal base and optional remote controllers.

Because we are your local EU-based distributor and service center, you do not have to ship defective units back to Asia for assessment. We handle the warranty process from our base in the Netherlands. If you experience any technical issues, we coordinate directly with our trusted manufacturing partners on your behalf, manage the return shipping, and arrange for replacement parts or repair services to minimize your vessel's downtime.

5. How do I control the searchlight? Do I need additional hardware?

It depends on which model you choose.

Our entry-level and mid-range models offer flexible control options. The base configuration is manually operated via physical knobs to adjust the horizontal, vertical, and focus positions. For added convenience, an upgraded version of this same series features electric regulation with a wired remote controller, allowing the operator to aim the light from the bridge or helm station.

Our flagship long-range model is a fully digital unit designed for modern bridge integration. It is controlled via an RS485 or RS422 network protocol, which allows seamless connection to your vessel's existing navigation or central control system. If your bridge is not networked, you can also order an optional dedicated remote controller.

Please note that the remote controller and network cables are purchased separately. This is because many of our clients, particularly naval and coast guard operators, prefer to integrate the searchlight directly into their ship's proprietary control system rather than using a standalone remote.

6. What is the lead time for a sample order versus a bulk order?

Our manufacturing partners are well-equipped to handle both small and large orders. For a single sample unit, the typical lead time is 10 to 15 working days from the date of order confirmation. For bulk orders (typically quantities of five units or more), the lead time extends to approximately 20 to 25 working days.

We will always confirm the exact shipping date and provide tracking information as soon as your order enters production.

7. Why should I buy from Searchlight EU rather than directly from the factory in Asia?

This is the most important question for any European buyer. When you buy from Searchlight EU, you are paying for legal security and logistical convenience, not just a metal box with LEDs.

As your local EU Authorized Representative, we assume the legal responsibility for product compliance under the new EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR). We handle all customs clearing, import duties, and VAT documentation so you receive your goods without unexpected delays or hidden fees. Furthermore, if a unit fails, you are dealing with a local company in the Netherlands that speaks your language and operates in your time zone, rather than navigating international communication barriers and expensive return shipping to Asia.

We are not a drop-shipper; we are your dedicated European service partner.

8. What is the IP rating and can these lights survive harsh North Sea weather?

Yes. Both units are built to withstand the most demanding marine environments. Our 5,000-meter commercial model carries an IP56 rating, meaning it is protected against powerful water jets and heavy seas. Our 10,000-meter flagship model goes a step further with an IP66 rating, offering total dust-tight protection and protection against powerful water jets. Additionally, this premium long-range model is approved for operation down to -40°C, making it suitable for Arctic convoy routes and winter conditions in the Baltic and North Seas.

9. Do you offer installation services?

Yes, we do. Searchlight EU is not just a distributor; we are a full-service installation provider. We can supply our searchlights as a standalone product, or we can provide on-site installation, commissioning, and crew training services across the Netherlands and other European port regions. Please contact us directly with your vessel specifications and preferred installation date for a tailored service quotation.
